Befriending and One-to-one English Language Project

Our befriending and one-to-one English Language project aims to help BAMER women who are new arrivals to the UK or have been here for years but are finding being in the UK a very isolating and lonely experience.

Our dedicated befrienders provide weekly one-to-one encouragement and support to help isolated women get out of the house and integrate into society. Befrienders are someone to talk to when you have a down day and someone to have a laugh with and have fun.

Befriending is immensely rewarding, and relies on an individual giving their time to support another person to enable them to make significant changes in their life. The MEWSo befriending project offers friendship and companionship to the most vulnerable BAMER women in need. Each befriender will work with one client, for two hours each week for up to six months, to partake in a mutually agreed activity, set and achieve personal goals, help promote independence and increase the client’s self confidence.

We are looking for volunteer befreinders with the following skills:

  • Patience and good listening skills: it takes time to get to know the client and earn their trust
  • Open minded and accepting: you must respect the opinions and beliefs of others.
  • Excellent communication: your buddy may not speak perfect English so it is important to speak clearly and encourage them to talk about their ambitions
  • Commitment: you must be available to meet your client every week for six months

One-to-one English Language

We offer one-to-one English Language support to isolated BAMER women through our team of qualified English Language teachers. This service is for women who find it difficult to attend mainstream ESOL classes because of a lack of confidence or because of a disability. Through one-to-one English Language classes we aim to improve clients level of English and give them the confidence to use that English in everyday life. The ultimate aim, where possible, is to give clients the confidence to attend mainstream ESOL classes to then be able to progress into further education and/or employment.

We are looking for volunteer English Language teachers

Have you just qualified as an ESOL teacher and need experience? Want to gain knowledge and understanding about working with BAMER women? We can provide support and guidance to new ESOL teachers and give to the experience to step up into paid employment. We require English Language teachers to commit 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of 4-6 months to make a real difference to someone’s life.
