In the memory of Jina Mahsa Amini and in solidarity with the Women’s movement in Iran

Updated: Sep 30

Demonstration in Trafalgar Square, 2024

The 14th of September is the second anniversary of the death of Mahsa Jina Amini and the uprising of women against the Islamic Regime of Iran. Many organisations across Europe are arranging different activities to mark this memorable day.

In the past two years, Iran’s Islamic Regime has continued to face more and more protests against its rule. The more executions they carry out and the more they repress the population, the more the people speak out against them. The Islamic hijab was set on fire in front of the world. The battle to resist all anti-women plans has begun and women are, and have always been, a huge social force in Iran, even now. The labour movement is the backbone of the revolutionary movement and is not just against the Regime but represents an anti-capitalist current, too.

Despite the brutality of the Islamic police forces against women in the streets, schools and work places, women cannot accept wearing the hijab any more, nor the gender apartheid and all other Islamic rules. The next generation does not accept or want Islamic rule and its step back in time. The Regime is desperate to manage the increasing protests from women, workers, nurses, pensioners etc, taking place all over the country. The arrests have gone up but the protests continue. Despite the brutality in prisons and the executions, the brave protesters shine as a light to the entire nation and to the world.

Appealing for the attention of public opinion around the world in solidarity with the struggles of workers, nurses and women, and for the release of political prisoners, is a priority. Left wing activists, trade unions and women's organisations are the truthful alliances to support workers, nurses, pensioners and women in their fight. In many countries in the West, the women's movement can fight for their demands, with the help of big campaigns, on their own, and in some cases, they achieve victories. However, everywhere coalitions are always stronger and achieve more than working alone. But in Iran, under the rule of a dictator, any activities for women’s rights in trying to build a movement is forbidden. They have no choice but to unite with other movements and protests to have any chance of succeeding. The solution to end with this criminal Regime is to unite these movements together. This is an important achievement of the Women-Life-Freedom movement, which should be committed to the memorial of the revolutionary uprising.

For our part here in the UK, we must stand with them and raise our voices against this barbaric Regime. We must let them know that they have our support and that of the wider world, that they are not alone and that they will be victorious.

 Thank you.
